Bread is the oldest and most eaten food in history. Jesus broke bread and fed 5000 with bread. According to history, the earliest bread was dated back to 8000 BC. Bread is the most widely eating food now and then in all parts of the world. Bread is a food made basically from a mixture of flour and water (dough) cooked by placing dough on heat or surrounding dough by heat. There is over ten thousand variety of bread in the world some of which we know and some of which we don’t. Bread like focaccia, bagels, milk bread, burger bread, baguettes, pita, tortilla, whole wheat, and rye bread are the world’s famous and well-known bread. Focaccia bread is known and loved in Italians, prepared mostly at Christmas. In recent times, further exploration in focaccia bread are in the areas of savory and seafood focaccia.
Focaccia bread is a flat Italian bread to which toppings and olive oil is sprinkled prior to rising and baking. Focaccia bread is probably the precursor to pizza but in where sauces are added to pizza, Focaccia bread is made without a sauce. It’s one of the healthiest and cheapest bread to taking a minimum of 60 minutes to prepare using an electronic mixer. Toppings that can be used for focaccia bread are; tomatoes, olives, carrots, peppers, onions, rosemary, thyme, cherry, grapes, banana, pineapple, apples, strawberry, cranberry, blackberry, etc. Always feel free to explore many other toppings like fruits, vegetables, stir-fried seafood, and herbs. ????????
Ingredients needed for a basic home focaccia bread ????????
- Flour 500g
- Olive oil 250ml
- salt 10g
- yeast 8g
- water 450m
- rosemary (a hand full)
- thyme 1 tsp
- sea salt 1 tsp (toppings)
- bell peppers (optional)
- basil (optional)
- fruits (optional)
in a bowl, place the flour and yeast and mix together, add the salt then mix again. pour in the oil, and water and mix very well using your hand until fully incorporated to form a dough. place dough in an electric mixer and mix for ten minutes. If you don’t have an electric mixer, perfect! flour a surface or a working tub, place the dough and knead for fifteen minutes until its soft and stretchy and you can literally see through the dough. this is my favorite part of the whole process, this where you understand your cravings and your love for focaccia. This is when you learn to appreciate the end product by reminding your self how you’re gonna eat it. Kneading the dough, so many options and ideas of food combination come to play in mind. you ask your self, what’s available at home, eggs, tuna, mayonnaise. what do I like the most? what do I want to try out with this bread? which combination works for my diet and weight? The simple act of working/ kneading a dough till it stretches is therapeutic to the body and soul. It is an exercise/workout mechanism blended into a fun activity.
Place dough in a greased pan, sprinkle olive oil and cover with a towel or cling fin, and set aside for 30 minutes to rise. After 30 minutes, open up the dough, using the handle of a spatula, a knife or a finger, dipping it in water, puncture the dough to expel bubbling on the surface. Repeat the process till all parts of the dough has been punctured. This act creates multiple holes on the surface of the bread. sprinkle olive oil on the dough, followed by sliced tomatoes, olives, rosemary, and sea salt. Sprinkle olive oil on the toppings and bake between 220oC to 300oC for twenty minutes.
Take out the well-baked bread, place on the table, Sprinkle olive on the hot bread to enable the bread to absorb the olive oil for extra softness. Focaccia bread is eaten as a snack and is cut to form a sandwich. it blends well with just a glass of milk or a cup of coffee. Focaccia bread is eaten with different varieties of soups eg; carrot, pumpkin, green pea, and cabbage. Its incredible taste can be got when eaten or topped with a chicken curry sauce or eaten alongside a seafood soup. For salads, Focaccia bread is also spiced, dried to form croutons and sprinkled on salads or taken with soup.
